Boomalli: Five Koorie Artists 1988
Boomalli: Five Koorie Artists was my first film. It looked at the creation of Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative and five of those artists, namely Tracey Moffatt, Bronwyn Bancroft, Jeffrey Samuels, Fiona Foley and [Arone] Raymond Meeks. I think the diversity was apparent. These artists had all come together at the same place at the same time doing different things but were all contemporary artists, Koorie artists or Aboriginal artists striving to create a slice of their life, their philosophy, their thoughts, and what artists were, what art is to them and what being Aboriginal was to them. The film centred on this theme of identity. MR Profiling five of the founding artists of Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative in Chippendale, Sydney, this film shows artists talking about their artistic practice, their process and approach, and where they see themselves positioned in Indigenous art, revealing a breadth to the practice of urban Aboriginal artists. Each artist Michael Riley interviewed stresses their departure and distinction from the ‘traditional’ Aboriginal artform that was prevalent at the time of the bicentenary in Australia. Boomalli: Five Koorie Artists was produced by Paul Humfress. |
